A seminar on Nordic peace and conflict resolution opens Nordic Council's week

​The Presidium and the Committees of the Nordic Council will convene in virtual meetings on 25-27 January. The topic of the joint meeting on 25 January is comprehensive security and Nordic peace and conflict resolution in the changing world. This seminar will be moderated by the chair of the Finnish Delegation to the Nordic Council Erkki Tuomioja (Social Democratic Parliamentary Group). Tuomioja sees that there is demand for Nordic peace and conflict resolution. “We live in a world where everything is increasingly interdependent. Violent conflicts, climate change and pandemics are challenges that can be tackled only by our joint efforts," Tuomioja emphasises. Member of Nordic Women Mediators Astrid Thors and President of the Nordic Council Bertel Haarder will also speak at the seminar.

 All Nordic Council's Committees as well as the Presidium will have virtual meetings during the week. On Tuesday 26 January, Finland's Minister for Nordic Cooperation and Equality Thomas Blomqvist (Swedish Parliamentary Group) has been invited to the meeting of the Committee for Welfare in the Nordic Region. The meeting will focus on matters related to equality.  Minister of Science and Culture Annika Saarikko (Centre Party Parliamentary Group) will take part in the meeting of the Committee for Knowledge and Culture in the Nordic Region. She will brief the Committee about the plans for cultural cooperation in 2021 as Finland holds the presidency of the Nordic Council this year. Representatives of Unicef will also take part in the meeting. They will tell about the Child Friendly Cities Model. On the agenda of the Committee for Knowledge and Culture in the Nordic Region is also a proposal for equal access to education and welfare for people with hearing challenges.

 On Tuesday 26 January, the Committee for Growth and Development in the Nordic Region will discuss a proposal for facilitating cooperation between national infrastructures for cross-border use of electronic authentication (eID). The Committee for Sustainable Nordic Region will discuss efforts to protect the Baltic Sea from eutrophication, reducing CO2 emissions of new buildings and joint Nordic strategy on dismantling wind farms and recycling their waste.
