Speaker Vanhanen expressed strong support for Ukraine

The Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen had a remote conversation with Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) on Thursday morning. Stefanchuk said the situation in Kiev is difficult and Russia has struck the administrative quarters overnight. He also asked Finland's support, among other things, in the humanitarian situation and the promotion of Ukraine's EU integration.

Vanhanen stated that Russia's military actions had shocked all Finns. Russia's attack is an attack on both Ukraine and the international law.

"Our thoughts are with you. The support of the Finnish Parliament and Finns for Ukraine is strong, and we are supporting and helping Ukraine in various ways," Vanhanen said.

Vanhanen said that Finland had decided on both humanitarian and arms aid to Ukraine. He also referred to strong transatlantic coordination and unity in deciding on sanctions against Russia.

Vanhanen wished the Ukrainian parliament and, through Stefanchuk, all the Ukrainians strength and determination in a difficult situation and hoped that the dialogue would continue.
