“I would like to express my heartfelt concerns about the situation in Kazakhstan, a country closely familiar to me, a country that has been heralded as a beacon of stability and the most affluent country in the region. I deeply regret the tragic loss of human lives during the past weeks and call upon all sides to refrain from any violence or provocations. It is imperative that social peace and trust be reinstated”, says Mr. Kimmo Kiljunen, MP (Social Democratic Party), Chair of the Finnish delegation to the Council of Europe.
“At the same time Kazakhstan’s independence and sovereignty must be upheld together with respecting the freedom of expression, including safeguards for free media and citizens’ rights to fair hearings. As a means to overcome the current crisis, consolidate the society and further trust and reconciliation within it, I would like to propose, that an independent international inquiry commission would be established to examine the causes, consequences of and possible remedies to the protests that turned violent. The outcome of this process could, in its own way, heal wounds and pave the way forward” Kiljunen says.
