U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Matti Vanhanen on 16 May, 2022.
Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen met United States Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Senators John Barrasso, Susan Collins and John Cornyn in Parliament on Monday, 16 May 2022. Vice Speaker Antti Rinne and the chairs of parliamentary groups will also attend the lunch meeting.
At the meeting, especially Russian invasion of Ukraine, support for Ukraine and Finland's decision to apply for NATO membership were discussed. Speaker Vanhanen thanked the U.S. for its support for Nato's open door policy. Vanhanen also appreciated positive signals from the Senate regarding the ratification process. In the U.S., the Senate has a key role in the ratification of new Nato members. Speaker also explained the parliamentary debate on NATO.
