On 19 October, Prime Minister Sanna Marin (Social Democratic Parliamentary Group) gave the Grand Committee her report on the European Council summit starting on 20 October. The topics of the summit are Ukraine and Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, food security and critical infrastructure, energy and economic issues, and external relations.
In the hearing of the Grand Committee, attention was drawn to energy matters, which the Prime Minister also described as the main topic of the summit. The discussion focused on ways to influence the price of energy, the proposals of the Commission's recent communication, joint purchases of gas and structural reforms of the electricity market, as well as the effects of member countries' national support measures on EU-level actions. Regarding the discussion about the gas price ceiling, the Grand Committee discussed, for example, the positions of member countries and the effects of a possible price cap on energy availability. Securing investments in clean energy production amid the current crisis also came up in the discussion.
Among other topics, the Grand Committee and the Prime Minister discussed, for example, the situation of fertilizer imports from Russia, the promotion of the EU's uniform visa practice for Russia. Related to the European Council's strategic China discussion, they also discussed Europe's technological self-sufficiency and member states' dependencies on individual states.
