The Inter-parliamentary Conference on Asylum and Immigration Issues in Helsinki (Monday, 9 September) provides a platform for discussion on the present state and the future of European migration and asylum policy.
Riikka Purra, Chair of the Administration Committee of the Eduskunta says that immigration has become a topic of high-level policymaking both at the EU level and in many Member States.
"Asylum and immigration policy issues, an inefficient asylum system and a lack of uniformity is placing pressure on the EU and its core systems, such as the Schengen acquis and the Dublin Convention", she continues.
"The less successful the EU's immigration policy is, the more Member States will develop their own solutions. The less we are willing to try and understand the root causes of global migratory pressures, the more ineffective the immigration policy will be."
The purpose of this inter-parliamentary conference is to focus on these issues and pains, Purra says.
